Kurt Dujardyn: «We are ready»
One night in 1978, Kurt Dujardyn 20 years old at the time, sat in on and was mesmerised by a curious press conference in the tiny town of La Chapelle-les-Herlaimont. On that day they were six who listened to a promise of the moon and stars about a new race in the desert. Kurt swore he would, one day, participate: “I didn’t have any money. I had to first get my career going. But I was so impressed by Thierry Sabine that I wanted to do it right away.” Kurt claims to be of the Sabine generation and of a Dakar spirit that he has already proven on two occasions: in a truck then in a car with his buddy Anton Gonnissen with whom he will partner with again in the rally. This time he will be aboard a quad to make it an unprecedented trilogy and this last mode needed a long period of thought. “We have been preparing them for two years. A quad is not at all easy to get ready. I think the biggest problem is the tyres. I concluded that you have to ride with 500 grams of pressure whereas the other competitors use two kilograms per wheel. I found some six ply tyres in the USA as well as tyre balls that are small rubber bubbles placed inside the tyre. We didn’t suffer any punctures in the testing we have done. We have thus decided not to carry spare tyres, which is advantageous for the structure. We are ready.”
In the path of his inspirer, he specifies: “Thierry Sabine said it: ‘A Dakar is won in a hanger not on the track.” A trilogy as well.
