Olivier Pottier: “Know if I can do it”

One thing’s for sure: Olivier Pottier is a man of challenges. A former paratrooper, company creator, butcher, delicatessen dealer and then a baker owning 5 shops, this amateur of extreme disciplines loves to take on new events. Here he is today at the start of the Dakar, on a quad, ready for 14 days of various challenges “physical and mental” offered by the January Raid. “I want to know if I can do it. That’s why I come”, says the man from Lisieux in Normandy, convinced that the question isn’t knowing “if he will suffer”, but “where, when and for how long”. At the age of 40, virgin of any Dakar, he is however far from the inexperienced privateer. On a quad ever since 1998 after years of karting, he rapidly enjoyed the sensation of “sliding and the locomotion” offered by his machine. And he got intoxicated by the thrill of freedom of off-road. “To be able to make the most of nature and the countryside for a person like me, who comes from a peasant family, is very important’’. Years later, a meeting with Antoine Morel introduced him to the world of off-road rallies. “He tested me during a whole weekend before telling me: you can do the Dakar”. His final podium at the 2007 Shamrock (3rd overall in the quad class) indeed confirmed what the boss of the MD Rallye Sport team had said. “Modest” and aware of the difficulties that await in South America, Olivier Pottier has no real objective concerning the standing. But to see the finish line, he’s ready to witness the worst nightmares. “That’s the way the Dakar is. This year the address has changes but the adventure remains the same”.
