Elisabeth Kraft : «The harder it is, the more at ease I am »

“I want to be the first woman to finish on a quad. But I also want to ride to score a result.” Elisabeth Kraft, who clearly announces her objectives, isn’t the sort of person who just competes to make up the numbers in the events she enters. An accomplished quad racer, she has been competing since 2000 and has already shown her potential several times. The last time was on the 2007 Baja in the Basque Country. “I rode none stop for 10 hours and 45 minutes in the mountains.” Confident in her physical capabilities, Elisabeth knows that the Dakar is a whole different kettle of fish. “I will start of slowly because if I know my quad and while I ride all year I never ride with the extra weight I will have to carry for the extra fuel tanks and material.” Her approach ahead of the difficulty of the event is simple: “I know I will have to use my mental strengths and when it comes to that I am rather unwavering. In fact, the harder it is, the more at ease I am.” Known firstly for her jet-ski results (1999 world champion), Elisabeth, also a veterinarian, discovered the quad thanks to the Transfennec, “this huge trek”, as she like to call it, has been run in Tunisia since 1997. She has won the Rally des Gazelles the last three years. She admits, with humour, that she comes to the Dakar with no navigation experience, but with some ambition. She is without a doubt enthusiastic about her baptism by fire. “This is really a childhood dream and it is terrific it is in South America”.
