Martijn Van Gastel : «It is a joke! »
When the members of the Yamaha Europe team asked him to join them for the Dakar, Martijn Van Gastel’s first thought was “it is a joke!” He was going to race in a rally he never did before? Despite the stakes, he didn’t hesitate very long. “The Dakar is a good rally to try.” Now, he is ready to confront the hardest difficulties imaginable on his Yamaha Raptor 700 quad. “I am always looking for new experiences. After this, I don’t know what I will do.”
Attention nevertheless. Under his nonchalant exterior, Martijn is conscientious hard worker, who isn’t coming to the Dakar as a tourist. A fertilizer producer for the farmers in his region, he chose to put in his professional life on hold to concentrate on the Dakar. The preparation for the rally was a real period of pleasure for this quad die-hard, who, strangely, “doesn’t like off-road motorcycling.” Up at dawn every day for two hours of fitness training, this mountain bike addict seems ready to take on the physical challenges imposed by this rally. And he has nothing but compliments for the rest of the members of the Yamaha team who are “mines of information”, who are helping him prepare for the January rally-raid in the best conditions. The objective? “To finish for myself and my sponsors.”
