Alex Brusselers: « Concentration is the ultimate quality »
Patience is a virtue that can take you a long way on the Dakar. Holland’s Alex Brusselers knows this well: before saddling up for his dream race as a rider, he spent five years in the assistance crew for the Dakarsports team. It is this team, that he knows by heart, that he will be a part of in South America. “I will be able to take on my first edition as a competitor in the best possible conditions with a good team and a big budget.” There’s no way he’d do the rally any other way. “When you take on the Dakar alone, your chances of finishing are very slim.”
Despite being a rookie, the quad rider can nourish some real hopes for his first go as a rider in the January classic. “I had set a goal of finishing first overall”, he admits, seriously, “but I recently broke my clavicle in a crash. Now, I just want to finish. Well, if I feel alright, I’ll try to go for a good result.”
Ever since his first bicycle, “with training wheels he never took off”, the Dutchman has been passionate about ATVs. Alex has an enormous record with eight Dutch titles between 1991 and 2003, European champion in 2001 and 2002 and a win in the quad category on the 2000 Touquet enduro.
Avid when it comes to sand, he knows that performance only comes with permanent concentration: “concentration is the ultimate quality. The hours of racing on the Dakar can seem very long, it wears you at mentally and concentration can be lost. And that’s when it becomes dangerous.”
