Pietro Fogliani : «200 kilograms of problems rather than 7 tons»
Pietro Fogliani will take the start of the 2009 Dakar with the desire to experience something different. The Italian will thus make a radical change on the rally. After three participations in a truck Pietro will ride a quad this time. “I said to myself that 200 kilograms of problems is better than seven tons”, kids the jovial Italian. “I chose a quad to be alone, to have the opportunity to ride at my own pace without having to rely on mechanics or co-drivers. I want to make my mistakes by my self.”
While he has great fondness for the African Continent – he lived in the Central African Republic after university -, Pietro can’t wait to return to South America. “I took part in the Patagonia-Atacama Rally in 2006 and the views were exceptional”, he remembers. “However, I was very preoccupied with the difficulties, especially the high mountains and the enormous holes. When you drop into a three metre hole with a truck, its okay, but with a quad you are just 70cms above the ground and that’s something entirely different.”
Aware of the pitfalls that await him, Pietro hasn’t fixed a specific goal. “I would like to see the Pacific Ocean, then maybe the Atlantic”, jokes Pietro. “The Dakar is like a big storm after a long dry spell. We’re not necessarily clean at the finish but we’re rinsed out.”
