«To finally visit Chile and…make it to Buenos Aires»
Winner of the quad category in 2006, Juan Manuel Gonzalez « Pedrega » wasn’t able to defend his honorific title in 2007 after falling victim to mechanical problems in the famous Elephant passage, near Nema. “The assistance truck took the wrong track. I waited for eight hours. I was able to kill time chatting with the herdsmen and trading some trinkets. But I had to drop out.” Classic “Pedrega”; who is known as a competitor never obsessed by competition. And yet his trajectory attests to a real savoir faire and conclusive results with Spanish championship titles in quad and enduro. The Dakar is his passion and he has become accustomed to racing according to the criteria. The change of décor last year was right up “Pedrega’s” alley, who is in favour of a wandering Dakar. For Joan Manual, this rally is also a way of life. For the moment, the scenery and the rally he discovered in Argentina sufficed his good humour and motivation. “I have to see what Chile is like”, he says with a smile. A crash last year on the Mendozza stage, when he was leading the overall quad standings, prohibited him from experiencing all the South American Dakar had to offer. To go all the way to the end of the 13 day rally and compete for a top three result, Joan Manual has modified his quad to better distribute the weight of the fuel tanks. “I had a tank on the front end and it was too heavy. This is what caused me to crash. “Joan Manual suffered a broken upper arm. His goals for 2010 are in tact. “My objective is to experience Chile and make it to Buenos Aires.”
