José María Peña: “We’re going to live a new adventure”

In his first Dakar, José María Peña made it to the Pink Lake. He was 3rd in quads and 89th in the overall bike standings. Although he had accomplished his goal in his first participation, his joy was not complete, because out of the three members of his team, he was the only one to reach the capital of Senegal with his quad. Juan Manuel González and Dionisio Santos had to withdraw, and this only served for José María to double his efforts. “From the second Mauritanian stage on, I was alone. It is a strange feeling. It gets very hard for the morale”. But José is one of those people that when they set out to do something, they invariably achieve it. He discovered quads only in 2000 and this vehicle quickly became the star of his garage in Logroño, Spain. It was bound to be the same for the Dakar. It was his life’s dream and he was able to make it come true on his first try. So the owner of “Motos José” decided to continue the adventure. “Do not try to make sense of all this, because it doesn’t. It is like a drug. So much physical, human and financial efforts! So you just keep coming back!” José María loves adventure and with the Dakar he seems to have found what he was looking for. “This year is a new start, a new adventure. We really leave for the unknown because we don’t know the place, or the terrain or what kind of snakes we might find”. José Maria worked on his preparation and cliamed the Baja Aragon 2008 on his new quad. His goal however remains the same: to finish. ‘’It’s the only thing that interests me with the spirit of solidarity of all the competitors. For me we should all be part of one same big team”.
