Carlos Avendaño: “I need the thrills this race gives me”.
Carlos Avendaño is somewhat of a pioneer. He began riding a quad 18 years ago, long before it became popular. This fact somehow changed his life (a part of it at least). “I saw one in the garage of my friend Oscar Álvarez, in Boadilla del Monte, near Madrid”. And that is all it took. Some years later he already held three Spanish championship titles. For the last 14 years, another part of his life has been devoted to adventure tours. He loved going to Morocco to ride his quad and he thought: “What about other people who want to do the same?” And from that day on, each year he organizes “Animated Adventures” (the name of his company) and takes groups of quad and bike amateurs to Morocco. With the assistance of his friend Olga who drives the truck with all the equipment, he becomes the guide and the mechanic for people seeking to get away and enjoy a bit of adventure. Of course, Carlos knows about winds and positioning, but he does not want to see too large. “I want to work and I love what I do, but I also want to enjoy life.” The problem is that ideas and initiatives seem to chase him. In 2004, he created a new company, totally on his own, and setting his own limits. With Chilly Racing, he offers through the Internet quad parts he has designed and produced himself. This year he launched a competition through Spain: the ‘Burn Gran Nacional’ with 6 legs and open to quads and bikes. Carlos is an innovator, an adventurer and a craftsman. So the Dakar fits him like a glove: “I need the thrills this race gives me”. His first experience, in 2007, went very smoothly. He finished 85th in the general standing, but 2nd in the quad category. “It’s a good result, but I arrived 5 hours later than the winner of that category. We will see if I can do better this year, but I first of all want to finish and if there’s a possibility of winning I will go for it…”
