“Not everyone dreams of struggling in the desert”
These days the man to beat on an ATV is Josef Machacek who will take part in his eighth Dakar with a desire to add to his five category wins. For Josef the word adventure has a literal meaning. He will, yet again, compete without assistance, but with the clear intention of putting in a strong showing. “The spirit of the Dakar, he believes, is that of its founders, that of Thierry Sabine”.
The conditions of the race are particularly hard. Without help, he has managed to make it to Dakar on five occasions. A pugnacity that he believes he shares with many other competitors. “The Dakar is a rally apart, for those people who are a little different. Not everyone dreams of struggling in the desert. But this is something that the competitors of this rally have in common”.
For Josef only victory counts which frees him from the never ending question of his objective on the Dakar. He does no specific training in particular, but built his ATV himself. “Because I am my own mechanic, I prefer to design my quad. It is also easier if I repair it”. This year, Josef will be joined by compatriot and newcomer on the rally, Martin Plechaty, and Poland’s Rafal Sonik, who finished on the podium of the last Dakar. The boss therefore adds a team dimension to his challenge: “I hope that we will have our three quads in the Top 5 and of course that one of us wins the race. And if it’s for one of them, their victory would also be mine”.
