Craig Bounds : «In the colours of Wales»
Welshman Craig Bounds laughs when he tells this story. In 1865, answering a call of the Argentinean government, 100s of Welsh arrived in Patagonia. Today, in Chubut province, there are nearly 20 000 Argentineans of Welsh ancestry, including 1500 who “speak, spanish and welsh but not a word of english”. Craig Bounds will feel at least a little bit at home on his first Dakar.
Being the first Welshman to take part in the legendary rally, Bounds doesn’t need extra motivation. “It is gigantic”, he says with a tone of someone who is carrying a lot of hopes on his shoulders. He also knows it will be rude. So, what worries him most? “The days will be long, I am wary of not getting enough sleep.”
The mechanic by trade does have several arguments in his favour. He’s been racing since the age of 12, first in trial then in enduro and motorbikes have been his life for a quarter of a century. He has always felt comfortable in “the community of riders”. He has competed in rallies all over the world, thus the Dakar won’t be his first major challenge. Yet, this rally has a particular savour and as a way to give himself a boost, Craig Bounds decided to paint his motorcycle “in the colours of Wales.”
