John Braat: “My wife isn’t very happy”

“My wife isn’t very happy to see me do the Dakar… but she doesn’t really have a choice”. For John Braat, it was unthinkable to miss out on the Dakar this year. Having already witnessed the roads of the most famous rally – in an assistance crew in 2005 – he finally had the opportunity to compete as a rider, mainly “thanks to Dad, my main sponsor”, he smiles. Therefore the worries of his wife have become secondary. “She has seen me riding for years now, she knows that she can trust me”, explains John who however adds: “At least, I hope…” Risks, this night-club manager and father of two, has taken a few in his career as a rider. He was indeed a three-time side-car Dutch champion; his father was even a world champion of the discipline. “I stopped side-car 6 years ago. It was too dangerous, the machine is too heavy”. It is therefore on his KTM 690 Rally – “the best bike there is” – that the Dutchman is about to compete in his first Dakar: “I have no idea what the race can look like”. He just hopes “to reach the finish”. He worked on his technique and “refreshed his navigation” at the Pax Rally that he finished in 35th position, just behind his team mate on the Dakar and friend in life, Ronny Roos.
