Michel Vandendriessche: “It’ll be the best birthday of my life!”

On the 17th of January in the middle of competitors delighted to have reached the finish of the Dakar, one will maybe have an even bigger smile on his face. If everything goes well, it is indeed in Buenos Aires that Michel Vandendriessche will be celebrating his 41st birthday. The Flemish has already overcome several obstacles. On his way to a training camp in Morocco, Michel’s bike got stolen while it was still on the trailer of his car. A magnanimous friend then made him an offer: “I’ll lend you my bike to train in Morocco. If you do well with it, I’ll give it to you for the Dakar”. And that’s how Michel made it to the start line of the Dakar in Buenos Aires on a 660 KTM. And during a training camp in Portugal a few months ago, the Belgian broke his foot: “We wanted to see how many kilometres we could do with only a full rear tank. But the bike wasn’t well balanced. I therefore fell on the gravel’’. Michel isn’t however too worried. His wide experience of off-road rallies (Spain, Portugal, Mali, Senegal) plays in his favour, but in South America, he will take off for the unknown. “At the same time, it’ll be a surprise for everyone”, he reassures himself. In Argentina and Chile, countries where he knows “the language but not the tracks”, Michel Vandendriessche will have at his side his companion from the Team Flanders Rallye, Philippe Depoorter, who rides “exactly like (him)”. “We will try to ride side by side”, explains Michel, “but it could prove to be difficult. The last time I tried to ride with a partner was during the last Pharaohs Rally. We lost hours waiting for each other…”
