Frédéric Villy: “Impossible not to come…”
Last year, Frédéric Villy didn’t register for the Dakar. Because (or thanks to) a promise he had made to his girlfriend during the 2007 edition: if he finished the race, he would marry her when returning to Rouen. As a result to that, Frederic finished 113th and his girlfriend became his wife. The consequence for this little craftsman: seeing the difficulty to link a family life, a professional life and a biker’s life, he hadn’t registered for the 2008 edition.
But this year, “seeing the destination, it was impossible not to come”. On the roads of South America, Fred who does his physical training in the same gym as many Argentinean and Chilean rugby players of the Rouen team will be alongside his biking mate, Julio Ano. In 2007 they had done the Dakar side by side. “It really links you up”, notes Frederic. This year, the two friends will have the same bike, the same gear and the same helmet. Only their numbers will be different: at the start in Buenos Aires, Julio will carry bib number 118 and Fred will have 218… But the two mates won’t be riding side by side. “It’s also a pleasure to ride on your own”, explains Frederic Villy. “We’ll see each other every evening at the bivouac”.
The main objective: “That both of us reach Buenos Aires”. Digging deeper, Frederic admits that he would aim at a position “in the Top 50”. And insisting just a little bit more, he says laughing that “it wouldn’t be bad finishing in front of Julio”. A question of supremacy but never with a bad spirit between the two comrades.
