Juan Diaz Rivera: “I’m known as ‘El Loco’”
“I believe it’s a hell of a challenge”. Juan Diaz Rivera knows what to expect from the Dakar. He is indeed used to unusual and complicated operations. He’s already crossed the American continent on a bike all along the Pan American. That was back in 1999 and the adventure had lasted six months with his friends Sunny and Jason. “My family and my friends call me ‘El Loco’. I like adventure and going beyond my limits”. But Juan isn’t completely crazy. The Dakar that he will be witnessing for the first time comes in his life after several experiences. “I ride bikes ever since the age of 11. I did high altitude trekking in the Himalayas and travelled through Thailand”. Juan has also taken part in many races in Mexico: the Coyota 250, the Cabo 250 or the Loreto 400, finishing on each occasion in the Top 5 of these events. The Dakar is an event he knows after being part of Sunny Irvine’s assistance in 2007: “I have a great memory of the race, its atmosphere and the organisation”. For this first experience, he’s delighted by the course. “What awaits us in terms of landscape is impressive”. A real Latino, he couldn’t miss out on this new edition on “his” continent but doesn’t yet know if he will carry on the Dakar experience after this edition. “I first have to reach the finish. We’ll see after. But I feel that I’m already attracted to the race”.
