Sunny Irvine: “Try to do better than my 58th place”
For five years, Sunny had been talking about the Dakar. Over there, in Cabo San Lucas, on the Southern tip of Baja California where he has set his tourism company, he had been dreaming of this one-of-a-kind race. At 29 years of age, Sunny already had quite some experience. Just after getting his Business Administration degree at the University of San Diego, he took off with his colleagues all the way to Ushuaia. A 6 months long bike raid, covering 30.000 kilometres and donating 80.000 dollars to the Honduras Red Cross, a solidarity action for the victims of hurricane Mitch. He also went around the World on a boat alongside 600 other students. It isn’t really a surprise to see him today as a company owner, dealing with the needs of thousands of passengers that huge cruising ships bring to his front door. Desert, raids, excursions, sailing, water sports; he offers everything to his busy clients mainly from North America. The Dakar could only fascinate him. His first appearance in 2007 made him live what the legend spreads ever since the beginning: physical suffering and a need for mental resources. “I broke two bones of my left foot as soon as day 6 of the race. The doctors wanted me to stop. I refused; I hung on and had huge difficulties because the left foot is the one you use for the gears. And when I made it, I was relieved”. And obviously Sunny didn’t want to hear about the Dakar. It only took a month for him to think about the rally again. He’s back and full of confidence, to finish “and try to do better than my 58th place”. Sunny is already a real member of the Dakar family who will be getting married to Doris just after this edition.
