Janos Desi : «The navigation poses problems for me»
Will the South American Dakar be difficult? “Riding a motorcycle is difficult in itself!” Janos Desi is kidding, but he has a score to settle on the Dakar. During his first participation in 2007, “everything went fine”, just until the 12th day of the rally. While in 45th place, he was forced to drop out due to a mechanical problem. This year, he just doesn’t want to finish. “I would like to be in the top 50”, explains the Hungarian who wants to finish in the position he was destined to, two years ago.
This year Janos believes he is “twice as ready, because I have prepared twice as much”, than two years ago. His preparation has consisted exclusively of riding in enduros across Europe. “Enduro racing is the best training there is. The race conditions are the same as those on the Dakar, a little bit less though for navigation.” Janos goes on to admit that “the navigation is a real problem”.
A handicap that could end up being decisive and he wouldn’t be surprised if he were to get lost in Argentina or Chile, despite having already ridden in Chile in the ISDE a few years ago…In 2007, he already experienced a misadventure of a slightly different sort; after blowing his engine on the 9th stage, Janos had to wait an entire night in the freezing desert for help to arrive. A gruelling episode in which the Hungarian didn’t dare close his eyes for fear of missing the broom truck.
