Ingo Waldschmidt : «I was raised in the sand and dunes »

Ingo Waldschmidt is the first Namibian to participate in the Dakar. This country in southern Africa provides all the characteristics of rally-raid - semi-desert landscapes, enormous dunes and vast wide-open spaces -, yet never once has one of its citizens had the means or idea to take on the Dakar. “I am very proud to be the first”, says Ingo. “I have been waiting for this since I was a kid and I finally managed to get the necessary budget.” And the least that can be said is that Namibian farmer – who look after 100 000 chickens – did a yeoman’s job on his quest to complete his budget signing up 172 sponsors. An evil necessity because the transport of his motorbike to South America will be costly: a fight from South Africa, another to Argentina and a return trip by boat.

Ingo isn’t complaining about having to cross the Atlantic. “As an African, for sure, I’m a little disappointed because it’s a dream of mine to do the Dakar on my continent. But the Dakar is still the Dakar and I’m very happy to discover South America. “

Ingo was able to make good use of Namibia’s terrain to prepare. “I just finished a 2000km ride in four days. I am ready”, rejoices Ingo. “I was raised in the dunes and sand and I love it.” On the other hand, this son of German parents has his concerns about navigation. “I’m still not very comfortable with the GPS”, he admits. “But a friend of mine helped me learn the road books.”
