Juan Pablo Zegers: “I’m not taking part just to take a walk in the park”
This young Chilean started competing in 2007. Without noise he managed that year two great results taking part in only two events: Chilean champion and 6th of the last Patagonia-Atacama. Each time, he was riding a Honda 450. It’ll be on that same machine that he will take on his first Dakar with the confidence of a confirmed sportsman despite his lack of experience in motorsports. There are only few disciplines in which he hasn’t taken part in a country where the natural environment allows the practice of the most varied sports. Polo, mountain-biking, golf, mountaineering: Juan Pablo has indeed built himself a capacity to adapt that will come in very handy in January. Very calmly he has decided not to focus on training sessions on his bike: “on the contrary, I based everything on the physical and mental aspects. For example I did mountain bike circuits in the Andes, because for me the Dakar won’t be technically difficult. One will however need to be very strong physically to remain focused and hang on during very long stages”. At the age of only 25, his only difficulty seems to have had to overcome the worries of his family seeing him take off for such a demanding adventure. Indeed Juan Pablo has clear ideas and keeps his feet on the ground. If he’s not that worried, it is because he knows his strong points, including a real talent in navigation: “I was also a guide”, adds the student in an engineering school. Pushed to compete by his cousin Luís Eguiguren, 53 years of age, who has already done the Dakar on a bike and will this year be competing in a car, Juan Pablo doesn’t intend to do tourism on his continent: “I will give all I have, because I’m not here for a walk in the park”…
