Cristobal Guerrero: «God willing I will finish»
Cristobal’s priority has always been his children. He raced in motocross and enduro in the 1980s but stopped doing what he loved to raise his family. Then when his sons got older he followed and helped them, gave them advice and supported them in their favourite sport of motor biking. Two of the four continued on, Victor and Cristobal, respectively 19 and 24 owe all they have to him. Victor competed this year in some rounds of the world enduro championship, while Cristobal won the 2005 WEC title and has joined the new Spanish Orios-Pons team. Now comes the chance for the proud father to live out his dream of doing the Dakar. «I am coming in a bit late in life at 42. But I am happy with what I have done in the Dakar Series. It has given me confidence. » 25th in Portugal, Cristobal had four months to come to terms with his KTM 525 and he’s demonstrating the ideal spirit of an amateur. «My intention is to finish and see what its like. » He adds, with a fine Andalusian accent, that he is a fan of the bull fights held in the arena in his town, which is the oldest of its kind in Spain. «God willing I will finish my first Dakar and I will be able to think about returning. » To not solely rely on divine leniency, Cristobal arranged his busy schedule as a business owner to put in a week of training in Morocco. «I went to practice navigation and test the bike again. » Cristobal admits to being nervous before the rally, which he should be because the family’s reputation is on the line.
