Dirk Van Dam : «I’d love to win, but it won’t be possible»
In the happy go lucky group of Dutch riders in the Pro Dakar Team, Dirk Van Dam will be one of the Dakar first timers. The Dutchman has already gotten a taste of rally adventure back in 2006 as a co-driver. Dirk finished the rally along side countryman Van Vilet in 55th place. “I was supposed to return to the Dakar in a car”, says Dirk; “But Evert Kroon, my team mate decided to do it on a bike, so I am doing the same.”
A judicious choice because Dirk is a biker at heart. All his pleasure is procured on two-wheels and it is also with the bike that he has the most experience. “I raced in the Dutch Motocross Championship for more than 20 years”, says Dirk. “The effort is obviously different on the Dakar. In motocross it is very intense and short, whereas on the Dakar it goes all day long and you have to be economical.” Dirk has other worries concerning his first Dakar: “I think it will be hard to ride and read the road book at the same time. You have to make decision by yourself whereas in a car you can rely on your team mate.” Fully aware of the difficulties the rally will pose, Dirk wants to finish the rally crossing Argentina and Chile more than anything else. “I’d love to win, but I don’t think that will be possible”, he says with a hardy laugh.
