Miran Stanovnik : «You cannot train for the human aspect»
44-year old Miran Stanovnik has little to prove on the Dakar. 11 participations, seven finishes and a fine 13th place overall obtained on his last run in 2007. Then, why is the Slovenian so strong-willed on the rally? “Well, I am still motivated to train”, he says. “The young riders are the ones who have to prove themselves. For me, the Dakar has become a drug, a poison.”
The Slovenian Army officer concedes his approach to the rally has changed through the years. “Today, my principle goal on the Dakar has more to do with the sporting aspect, whereas when I first raced I was searching more for the adventure side.” Despite all his experience, Miran doesn’t project an excessive ambition and remains humble when it comes to the rally. “It is hard to talk about an objective this year because no one really knows where we’re going and what awaits us. Now, I would like to flirt with the top 15 overall and the top three in the marathon category.”
Miran has cultivated a special relationship with the Dakar. The Slovenian is also one of the most charming competitors around. On his maiden Dakar he won the fair-play award. Why he is such a gentleman? “I don’t know”, he says. “You can improve your technique or your navigation on a bike, but you can’t train for the human aspect.” It is that simple.
