Thomas De Bois: «The standings have no importance»
For Thomas De Bois, the Dakar remains a story about friends. Along with three other Dutchman - Teus Visser, Gerard Rond and Evert Kroon - , he sets off again, in 2009, on his assault of the Dakar. Thomas has twice finished the rally: 60th in 2005 and 110th in 2007 when he rode along side Evert and Visser. Sandwiched between his two personal triumphs he had a disappointing experience as a co-driver in 2006, when he was forced to retire.
Despite his interest in cars, Thomas is above all else “a biker”. His greatest times on the Dakar have come when he was on two and not four wheels. “I remember one day in Mauritania where, very prudently, I left at 8:30 in the morning and I finally finished in the middle of the night at 1am. It was a very long day; but I experienced some extraordinary things.”
Despite having already felt what it’s like to finish the Dakar after two intense weeks of effort, Thomas isn’t getting carried away and doesn’t want to hear mention of the standings. “I simply want to finish. Where I finish is of no importance whatsoever.” The Dutchman waited so long to be able to take part in the rally-raid – he followed all the previous Dakars in the press or watched them on television -, that at the age of 46, he now is extra careful to savour each day he spends on his KTM.

Para Thomas De Bois, el Dakar significa una historia de amigos. Junto a tres compatriotas holandeses - Teus Visser, Gerard Rond y Evert Kroon -, en el 2009 vuelve a dar el salto en el Dakar. Este holandés participó en dos oportunidades en el rally, en moto: en el 2005 (60ª) y en el 2007, cuando corrió en compañía de Evert y de Visser (110ª). Entre tiempo, vivió una mala experiencia como copiloto en el 2006 cuando tuvo que abandonar.
A pesar de su inclinación por el auto, Thomas se define ante todo como “un biker”. Además, en moto vivió las mejores emociones en el Dakar. “Recuerdo una jornada en Mauritania cuando, muy prudente, partí a las 8h30 de la mañana y terminé a mitad de la noche, a la 1h”. cuenta. “Fue una larga jornada pero experimenté sensaciones magníficas”.
Aún si ya se dio el gusto de una llegada en el Dakar, después de dos semanas de intensos esfuerzos, Thomas no se embala y no quiere escuchar hablar de posición. “Lo único que quiero es terminar, afirma muy suelto, la clasificación no tienen ninguna importancia”. El Holandés esperó tanto poder enfilarse en el rally raid – para ello siguió todas las ediciones del Dakar a través de la prensa y la televisión- que a los 46 años, da muestras de mucha prudencia para poder vivir a pleno cada día que pase en su KTM.
