Gerard List: « The first Dutchman to finish the Dakar on a 250»
For Gerard List, the tiny island of Vinland, in northern Holland, is a mini-Dakar with its sand, dunes and wet sections. «But no rocks», Gerard amuses. The Dutchman, who trains here five times per week, likes the outdoors. That of his home island where he runs his own nature expedition business and that what he experienced on his first Dakar in 2006. «My best memory was going through the rocky sections in Morocco», he specifies. « I took a break and below me I saw the others going by. It was wonderful.»
He also remembers the spirit of fair play that the rally is so famous for. «Nobody in motocross ever stops, no one helps anyone. Here, theoretically, even Cyril Despres would stop to help me or I could also end up stopping to help someone. We’re all together in the desert living the same thing. A real fraternity is formed.»
For South American adventure Gerard has opted for a 250 Yamaha, which is lighter and better suited to his size than a 450. He bike will play a big part in his objective. «I want to be the first Dutchman to finish the Dakar on a 250.» He did finish the Central European round of the Dakar Series. Could this be a sign? Gerard also takes inspirations from the Argo-Chilean challenge. «The experienced riders ,who know the terrain, have an advantage in Africa«, he explains. «But this will be a new route for everyone and I love that. We will all be on more equal terms.»
