Hans-Jos Liefhebber : « Ride with common sense»

For his first Dakar, Dutchman Hans-Jos Liefhebber anticipates a curious fight. His main adversary in the rally will be himself and his impulses. “I have always wanted to win all the time, I love competition.” His Dakar story began a long time ago. “When I was little I was fascinated with this race. Seeing the big trucks in the heart of the desert left an indelible impression.” An avid motocross competitor since the age of 14, he could have switched to rally-raid much earlier. But to make his way to the race of his dreams, Hans-Jos took several different paths; “I stopped riding in 1994 to spend more time in school and life in general…And then I got back into it in 2001.” As the years went by, the idea of a Dakar became more and more precise. The race was the logical end to a journey in constant progression. “When I was young, I competed in regional races in Holland. Later, I got a taste of enduro on a fantastic race, the Touquet.” At the age of 38, the realtor is now taking the next step, and he is wary of himself. “I think it will be okay”, he says moderately. “I ride with a lot more common sense than when I was a kid.” When at speed, he will try to remember what some of his bike friends have told him. “I spoke to some former riders. They told me: don’t worry about the riding, but think about the length of the rally.” With this advice, the Dutchman is looking for success on his first Dakar.
