Gerard Rond : «The motorcycle is the real Dakar»
For the 2009 Dakar Gerard Rond will return to his first love, the motorcycle. In 2008, the Dutchman was to try his luck with a car, following a first try in 2006 that ended in failure. But Gerard is back on his motorbike after his first Dakar way back in 1986. “A lot of things have changed on the rally since then”, says Gerard. “The bikes were horrible during that time and we had a lot of technical problems with them.” There were a lot less people, but overall, I think the adventure and spirit has remained the same.”
When evoking the Dakar, Gerard sums it all up in one word « fun ». And for Gerard the fun naturally takes place aboard a bike. “It’s more amusing and harder than with a car. For me it is the real Dakar.”
Motor racing is part of Gerard’s daily routine. Back in Holland he runs a 40 hectares motor sport training centre, he organises numerous events during the year (300 per year). Just recently he organised a race on run on the beach, which was aired on live television with more than 150 000 spectators in attendance. The Dutchman also has a lot of riding experience with his machine and can boast of having participated in nearly 1000 motocross races. Yet, he comes to the Dakar with no pretensions. “In terms of pure speed, I could run in the top 50”, Gerard esteems. “But I am worried about the dust, it is very dangerous, so I will go at my own pace. I want to finish more than anything else.”
