Patrick Bonnardel: «A large portion of bravery»

Patrick Bonnardel has set a challenge for himself on his first Dakar. “It is the hardest rally in the world that is my motivation”, he explains. “I want to see if I am up to the challenge of this race and if I can become one of those who have gone all the way.” The Parisian based business owner approaches rally-raiding in a serene manner and isn’t putting any excess pressure on himself. “I don’t have any particular worries. With the new route we will all be on equal terms, there will be both nice and bad surprises for everyone.” And he adds: “I think that the nights will be the hardest. Having to pitch a tent at the bivouac and see to many things before getting the chance to recuperate.”

This rider will line up for the start with humility. “I am leaving with a realistic goal of finishing. Beyond that, I know I have an aggressive personality, so I’ll see how everything goes at the start of the rally then if I feel good, I’ll open up the throttle.”

At the age of 51, Patrick views the Dakar as a culmination. He’s spent half his life thinking about it. From the times in Paris where as a spectator he watched the first starts. His professional obligations, as well as a family environment far from motor racing delayed his participation just until today. But Patrick Bonnardel, who has been working on his fitness since last April is ready to measure himself with a “large portion of bravery”.
