Antonio Cabini: « A motorcycle is harder but better»

Antonio Cabini has “nostalgically” returned to the motorcycle category. At 52, the native of Milan has 13 Dakars behind him. 10 on a motorcycle, I in a car and two in a truck. Loyal through and through to the two wheel machines, he has just one solution. Nothing can replace the vehicle that is first love. “It’s harder but its better. You have to concentrate more. But the sensations are stronger. There is more solidarity and that’s what I like”. From his first encounter with the Dakar, in 1984, until today, he has witnessed the evolution of the rally. “It’s less adventurous than before, but a lot netter organised, more technical and also more difficult”.

At the age of 52, the physical challenge posed with a motorcycle has him more excited than ever. “I want to see if I am still fit enough to do it! And if I can I’ll be back next year”. The Italian isn’t too concerned. Up until now, prudence and awareness of the rally’s difficulties have helped to avoid accidents, “except once, in 1985”, when he, “fell of his bike but still managed to finish the race…”

This year, for his return to two wheels and still on a KTM, Antonio has set himself a “small goal of finishing among the first 60”. To do this, he hasn’t forgotten the lesson he has held onto for years. “The hardest thing is to find the right pace. You can’t improvise on the Dakar. You have to preview everything ahead of time.”
