Carlo Alberto Mercandelli: “I could write a book”
Ask Carlo Alberto Mercandelli to talk to you about his best memory on the Dakar. “I have way too many best memories! I could write a book on them’’. He could indeed mention the 1990 Dakar finished in 44th position despite a destroyed bike, a broken arm, a loss of conscience during eight hours after hitting a donkey: “Normal things on a Dakar”.
His saddest memory on the other hand is clear in the mind of the Italian: “1986. The death of Thierry Sabine. I still have it in my heart’’.
With seven Dakar rallies on his record and despite only finishing two, Carlo Alberto Mercandelli is a bit of an old timer. A status that pushed his local newspaper to contact him to ask him to write a daily feature after each stage. “I will write a few notes and my wife will send them with her computer”. Indeed, Carlo Alberto won’t go to South America on his own. His wife works for Motosprint magazine, the most read motorsports weekly in Italy.
Added to that Carlo Alberto will use his South American journey for a charity cause. Each year the Casale Monferrato church sends money to a humanitarian fund in Argentina that takes care of widows and orphans and is managed by a bishop who is from the same place where Carlo Alberto lives. This year, the man from Piemonte has asked his sponsors to play a part in this charity and he will personally bring the money raised to Argentina.
