Evert Kroon: «I’ve returned to what I am: a biker »
Following two failed attempts in a car – running out of fuel in 2005 and a serious accident in 2006 - Evert Kroon had enough. In 2007, he returned to his first love, the motorcycle with a definitive goal: finally tame the Dakar and cross the finish line. To do this, Evert did all he could to give himself the best possible chance for success in asking his friend and accomplished rider Teus Visser to help him make it to Dakar, which he did.
For 2009, Teus Visser is going for it and has his sights set on a top 20 result. This time Evert will have to make do by himself. “I want to, more than anything else, finish the rally”, he says. “If I can do that it would be great if to finish in the top 50.” The Dutchman has concerns about the weather conditions on the first South American edition of the Dakar. “I am afraid there will be huge temperature differences. We will ride through Argentina where it could be very hot and it could rain and be very cool in northern Chile. We will have to make sure the bikes are in top condition in order to finish with extra attention paid to the engines.”
In 2008, he dreamed of setting off again in a car. In Argentina and Chile he will be back on his KTM. “I am a biker”, explains Evert. “Doing it on a motorbike is the most difficult and dangerous, but it is what I like most.” And Evert is doing everything he can to be ready for the rally. After losing four kilograms since last year, he is hoping to drop another four before the start.
