Alain Bouzon: «We remember failures more than victories »
His retirement on the 2007 Dakar still sticks in his craw. Three days from the finish, Alain Bouzon injured his ankle and paid a visit to the medical tent. The doctor’s attention focused on a bruise to his chest. “He thought I had a lung problem”, says Alain. “He wouldn’t let me continue. I went to Dakar for tests. They didn’t find anything but I couldn’t rejoin the race.” A misadventure, an “injustice” he says, difficult to accept even more so at 46 years of age, the Frenchman knows his chances of finishing the Dakar are dwindling. “Generally, we remember failures more than victories,” believes the salesman.
For the 2009 Dakar, Alain Bouzon will be there for a little bit of “revenge”. “This will be my last rally, whether I finish or not, I promised my family.”
Alain has already experienced finishing a Dakar in 2000. But the year before, he and his father clandestinely rode the length of the route along side the entered riders. “It was a way for me to prepare for the following year and it was a cherished opportunity to be alone with my dad.”
His best moment will always be his encounter with Fabrizio Meoni. “My boss was Italian, so I asked Fabrizio if he would phone him to say a few words”, Alain remembers. “He did it with pleasure and I filmed the conversation. He was killed three days later. When I came home I showed the video to my bosses, everyone wept.”
