Herwin de Roo : «Those who are afraid don’t go»
“In Holland, we don’t have dunes, but we have a lot of sand.” No, Herwin de Roo won’t be impressed by the sand on his first Dakar. The longer stages and the routes at high altitude pose more problems for him, but not to the point of causing anguish. “Those who are afraid of a rally like this don’t go”, he assures. “In case it gets tough, things have to be done tranquilly. » The only worry is “forgetting my belongings in Holland!”
Herwin de Roo has a certain amount of all-terrain experience with 13 participations in the Dutch Enduro Championship. “I am out there every weekend.” Herwin de Roo also travels extensively. His job as a camping-car salesman has taken him to the United States, Norway, Brazil and Italy. But this die-hard biker dreamed about the Dakar for a very long time. “I am 42 and I decided to do the Dakar 30 years ago!” Despite his family not being that interested, young Herwin dreamed of someday riding on the world’s most famous rally-raid since its first editions.
Now that big the day has arrived, Herwin promises to “give it his all”. And to avoid not falling victim to his main weakness: a lapse of concentration that he encountered in the races in which he took part in this past season. “Do you have an idea to help me improve on this”, he asks while laughing.
