Bertrand Besse : « To finish is a huge ambition»
Bertrand comes to the Dakar attracted to adventure and a passion for wide-open spaces. He first discovered breathtaking scenery between 1985 and 1987, when he fulfilled his military service as a volunteer for an NGO. The experience with “Volunteers for Progress”, allowed him to discover Africa through his missions in the Guinea-Bissau territory. By riding across the country on motorcycle, Bertrand got a taste for rally-raid like trajectories. “I even finished my service by returning to France via Mali, Niger and North Africa.” Bertrand transposed this taste of Africa towards the Dakar that he saw on a few occasions in Toulouse. Turned down last year, Bertrand rode in the Shamrock Rally to get some much needed confidence for the 2009 Dakar. “This Dakar in South America suits me because I will return to the wide-open spaces that I have been looking for. I will have the little experience I picked up on the Shamrock that I rode by myself. For the Dakar, I benefited from Charles Caron’s advice, which I think will give me the best chance of finishing.” Bertrand has put together a group of sponsors from his home region, including the agricultural cooperative he works for. “My main sponsor, Cascap, is a small cooperative of 200 farmers from whom we buy their crops: durum wheat, bread wheat and sorghum.” Comfortable in his life of the land, accustomed to the tranquillity of his farm or pampering his two pure-bread Arabians, Bertrand doesn’t have any other goal than to finish. “To finish a Dakar is in itself a huge ambition.”
