Mattos Dimas : «It’s like scaling Everest or wining the World Cup»

In 2007, Mattos Dimas was forced to retire just two stages from the end of his debut Dakar after breaking his shoulder and severely damaging his leg. But this Brazilian rider doesn’t give up that easy. He wants to finish the Dakar and cross the finish line in Buenos Aires. “I must finish the Dakar”, says Mattos. “Finishing the Dakar for a rider is what scaling Everest is to a mountain climber, or what wining the World Cup is to a footballer.”

Mattos knows exactly what he needs to do to make his dream a reality. “The most difficult aspect of the Dakar isn’t the physical but rather the psychological side. I have to keep everything real and hold on to the goal of finishing the rally. I now that at the start of a race I have a tendency to get of control and start racing for a spot in the standings and I need to avoid that.”

Mattos will also be able to count on the rally taking place on familiar terrain, in Argentina where he has raced twice and in Chile. “I think a large portion of the Argentinean and Chilean tracks are similar to what we’ve run in Africa. And I adore the dunes, so fro me it will feel a little bit like being at home.” Here’s hoping for him that this sentiment will see him finish.
