Robert Van Olst : «If it is difficult all the better»

Officially, Robert Van Olst will take part in his first Dakar this year. In reality he has already done it twice. In 2000, without entering, he rode his motorcycle to follow the entered riders. This was to just ride in the tracks of the competitors. Just to see. With a friend, he did the rally (often taking to the asphalt roads) just until Dakar, “and beyond that, just to Ghana!”

That was the year something clicked: the following year was dedicated to preparing for his official attempt. Following the cancellation last year, Robert went to Africa anyway, for the fun of it and see how he got on in the Mauritanian dunes. This year, finally, Robert will have the chance to experience “unique moments” of something he has dreamed about for a long time. And the difficulties forecasted don’t scare him. “Danger is part of the adventure so if it is difficult all the better!”

As an accomplished athlete – he competes in triathlons and is a competitive runner – Robert Van Olst says he has no apprehensions ahead of the start. Nothing seems to really perturb him, not even the impressive crash he had on the Transoriantale. “I fell in a dune and landed 40 metres below. I broke some ribs and had lots of bruises on my head! The helicopter came to get me and I was able to leave the next morning to complete the rally.” The South American Dakar seems to him to be relatively open. “Everyone will have the same chance on this new continent.” His ambition are more collective than individual. Robert Van Olst will be really satisfied « if the entire Team Dutch Dakar arrives in Buenos Aires. »
