Alex van den Broek: “The ultimate challenge”

That’s what you call a career plan: “My objective is to take part in three Dakars, the first to finish, the second to put in a strong result and the third to do better if others ahead of me have a problem!” At 36 years of age, Alex van den Broek takes on the Dakar in very serious fashion. His appearance on the most famous of rallies is a logical consequence of a career started “little, watching the race on TV”, followed by several appearances in the European and World trial championships, then enduro and the opening of trial riding schools for which he is a director. “When you like off-road, the Dakar is the ultimate challenge to take on”, says the Dutchman. So when a friend, driver of an assistance truck of the Dutch Team Dakar offered to have him in the group and take part in the rally, Alex didn’t hesitate a second. For months now, the biker wakes up every morning “hoping that it’s the 3rd of January”, starting date of the race. A race that he hopes will be “technical” because “riding at 160km/h on long flat sand portions isn’t really what I’m good at”. Alex’s team mates believe that he has the qualities to finish one day in the Top 10. He just has one main concern: “the lack of sleep”. During a training session in Tunisia while everything was going well, the Dutchman and his mates only slept 6 hours per night. “I need eight hours of sleep”, however explains Alex. “And on the Dakar, I’m worried that I might need three nights to have my eight hours of sleep!”
