Jonathan Stamper: “I do things that are even more difficult”
At age 43 Jonathan Stamper will be able to take on the challenge set two years ago by his friend Stanley Watt. For this amateur rider, used to the road before switching to off-road only 24 months ago, the challenge is huge. Jonathan Stamper is not impressionable: having spent time in the army, this warrior has “done things more difficult than the Dakar”. Like, for example, “a long distance canoeing record, 24-hours non-stop…” Physically he has all he will need to go the distance. And his recent appearances at the Spain and Tunisia-Libya rallies have given him quite some confidence. After 5000 kilometres of rocky and sand paths, the security consultant is ready to cross the Atlantic.
When he’s alone, on a dirt track, Jonathan Stamper feels at home: “I like the solitude of racing, to do eight to nine hours on the bike and remain responsible, focused and to take the good decisions”.
But while the Brit has just one clear objective – to finish the race – the result isn’t the only thing he has in mind. Along with his team, he is also involved in a campaign to help riders who have had serious accidents through the Riding for Health association of which the sponsors of Team Front GB are proud donors.
