Teus Visser: «I am aiming for the top 20»
Teus Visser worked for two years as a mechanic preparing the motorcycles and cars of fellow Dutchmen Thomas Dubois and Evert Kroon. In 2007 he went from repairing to riding. «My boss, Evert Kroon made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. He told me ’if you can get Thomas and I to the finish, I will help you to set off by yourself next year in order to try for a top finish‘.»
Teus didn’t hesitate. The former motocross standout made sure his two friends made it to the end of the 2007 Dakar but at a slow speed and not without struggles. “I remember a stage where all three of us had mechanical difficulties in the middle of nowhere”, Teus Visser says. “We made all the repairs but it was already nighttime. I was very surprised we finished the Dakar.” Teus finished 107th, far from the potential of the former professional rider.
For the 2009 Dakar, the Dutchman, who held up his end of the bargain, will race alone. He will still look after the mechanical well being of the team’s three bikes, but in the stages he will race, flat out, for himself. He finished 9th in the 1993 world motocross championship and returns to the Dakar with new ambitions boosted by strong performances in 2008. Teus predicts: “this year, I am aiming for the top 20.”
