Jean-François Jayez: “My winter jacket or my swim suit?”

How does one get to take part in the Dakar? Jean-François Jayez lives at Le Touquet, crib of Thierry Sabine’s first crazy ideas and therefore “crib of the Dakar”. For his first appearance in the January raid, back in 2007, he had mentioned that local link with the founder of the Dakar to “convince the organisers”. And it had worked, Jean-François had been able to start and riding calmly, he had made his way to the shores of the Lac Rose. After two weeks of competition, he wasn’t quite sure he wanted to give it another go: “I was delighted to make it to the finish of the race… but how difficult it was! And long!” And then the destination of the 2009 Dakar was announced. Everything changed. With this South American race, Jean-François relishes “the adventure and discovery side” that he has always associated to the Dakar since viewing the first starts of the race. At that time he had his “eyes wide open” and already the will to take part. The “great family” of the race probably also pushed him a little to start again. Friend and former flat mate of Eric Croquelois, also known as “Croquette”, Jean-François will find on the tracks another buddy in Bertrand Le Blevec. He intends on riding at his rhythm without ever worrying about the standings. Indeed he knows that the Dakar requires “a full time attention” for those who hope to see the finish. Based on that, the only unknown thing of the race concerns the clothes to wear: “What’s the weather like over there? I don’t know if I have to take my winter jacket or my swim suit…”
