THE VALUES
Motorbikes, cars, and trucks on one side; African villages, forests, and Sahara desert on the other. What seems a shocking contrast is actually a step towards the future. Dakar is an inspiration that brought the two worlds together and enabled them to build a special relationship. It speaks not only of sports, but also of purpose; this taste for adventure, and for a little-known continent, gave rise to a unique machine that provokes human emotion.
The 28-year old relationship between Dakar and Africa has now matured. It has blossomed from a friendship into an alliance between two adults who have decided to share in the work as well as the celebration.
Explore continuously
Africa is immense and profoundly diverse. Dakar has been exploring it at its pace since 1979, writing history with each country it crosses. The rally's heritage is a series of solid anchor points that link together to build the event, and the city of Dakar – a major African capital and the final goal for most rallies – is a natural symbol.
Work together
The A.S.O. works with African partners throughout the event, from mapping the route to discussing the overall vision for the rally. Decisions at all levels are made jointly with those who know the land best. This collaboration is carried out through a national inter-ministerial commission comprised of government representatives from each of the countries that the rally plans to cross. This commission is the body that gives the Dakar the final authorisation within each country, according to specifications that serve as a Bible governing their relationship.
Relay passion
The benefits that the Dakar brings to the regions it crosses are not only financial. This top-tier sporting event, the largest rally in the global circuit, lends a powerful image to each country it visits. Dakar's media coverage links the countries to a prestigious event that offers an upbeat picture – far removed from the political turmoil, healthcare concerns, and drought typically making the headlines. The geographic and cultural insight provided by the rally gives a concrete boost to Africa's image.
Excite Africa
While Dakar's exotic aspect has naturally fuelled its success in Europe, it has also seduced the African people. The enchantment is not on the same level, but the event undeniably sparks excitement on the continent. Whether in Mali, Burkina Faso, or Senegal, the Dakar rally triggers waves of enthusiasm. Furthermore, the passion seen on fans' faces lining the route illustrates their attachment to the event. A genuine desire for exchange is clear in the buoyant demonstrations as well as more discrete displays in the Sahara.
Respect the African people
Dakar adheres to the principle of mutual respect. It has been invited to Africa for 30 years, and strives to treasure this gift by proving itself worthy and showing its appreciation. Along these lines, the Dakar organisers are aware that their most important responsibility is to ensure the safety of people along the route. Organisers and competitors alike are continuously looking out for possible dangers, and are unrelenting in their efforts to make progress in this crucial area.
Protect the environment
Respecting Africa means being concerned with preserving its environment. Dakar makes special efforts to protect delicate sites along the route, and has committed to a long-term action programme in association with SOS Sahel. This programme supports local sustainable development initiatives started and managed by community leaders; an empowerment approach entirely consistent with A.S.O.'s aims.
