Janis Vinters: "One day I can win"
Toughness, injuries and satisfaction at the finish... Not many strong sensations are unknown to Janis Vinters on the Dakar. Competing on his first Dakar in 2004, the Latvian was rapidly considered as a tough rider in terms of falls. To start with, the farmer suffered two accidents during the 2004 Dakar. For the first one, he seriously hurt his leg. Not a problem, the Latvian jumped back on his saddle and carried on, before suffering another major setback that forced him to quit just before the finish. In 2005, it was the same old story again. This time the biker broke his arm and shoulder.
Thankfully his results were a lot better from then on with a 10th spot in 2006 and 6th position in 2007... Enough to strengthen the ambitions of a rider who is used to the Latvian championships and Estonian enduro races. "I believe that one day I can win. I will try this year because it’s a competition and I want to win, but I know that it won’t be easy. I ride a new KTM 690 but it’s a serial bike not like those the professionals have", explains Janis Vinters.
Whatever the result, the man who also likes singing in his spare time will make the best of each moment of the rally that he considers being "a very beautiful competition".
