The seasons tick off and fortunately for Jordi Viladoms they are not alike. In 2008, the Spaniard made his way to Lisbon after a season of struggles, following his crash on the 2007 Dakar. After a few warm-up races he arrived to work for Marc Coma, following promising runs on the Patagonia-Atacama and the Pharaons Rally. The cancellation of the Dakar allowed Viladoms to have surgery on his left elbow and take his time to recover and get back in shape. Jordi Viladoms took part in five more races with the idea of not panicking or riding for results but rather to get back on form. He entered the 2009 Dakar with added experience to get that 300 pound gorilla off his back and finish rally-raiding’s main event for the first time in three tries. 7th in Buenos Aires would be a fine result for this calm Catalan who continues to prove just how much a team player he is. “We put in a good team race and we won the Dakar with Marc (Coma), which was the goal. On a personal note, I was very pleased to win the Copiapo-Copiapo stage, but I could have finished higher up the overall standings had I not had to give Marc a wheel.” Once again riding for the team’s number one Marc Coma, Jordi Viladoms has never been as ready following a season in which he constantly battled for podium results; Fourth (I stage win) on the Tunisia Rally, 5th (3 stage wins) in Sardinia and 2nd (I stage win) in Morocco, all of which was ideal for preparing for his 4th Dakar. “I have never been this well prepared for a Dakar. I now know this race very well and I gathered a lot of experience on the other rallies. Helping Marc Coma is my number one priority. Like last year.” The defending Dakar champion can count on a lieutenant more reliable and competitive than ever.
