SPORTING ASPECTS

The orientation given to the Dakar following changes to the regulations adopted in 2006, corresponds to wishes expressed by all those involved in the race. Closer to its values, the rally, once again a raid, will satisfy both the public, which delights in sudden changes of situation, and competitors, especially amateurs, who will be able to demonstrate their skills. The emphasis placed on navigation will also contribute to a better balance between professional and amateur drivers. This principle will once again be the main theme of the regulations in 2007.

Navigation

The "silent" GPS. The GPS screen will no longer indicate deviations from the ideal trajectory nor the direction that needs to be followed. It will be reduced to its basic function of compass.

Hidden Way Points (WPM). These are compulsory Way Points which only appear on the GPS screen within a radius of 3 km. They can only be reached by respecting the indications in the road book.

The activation of a release code, resulting in a penalty, enables competitors that are lost to view WPMs, CPs and entry and exit points in villages, and follow directions on their GPS screens. The use of the code results in penalties which can include exclusion from the race.

Professionals and amateurs alike

One or two stages without assistance vehicles have been planned. With only mutual aid between competitors accepted, the difference in means between professionals and amateurs is thereby reduced.

Categories

Focus on the 450 cm3 category. The bonus is multiplied by four for motorbikes of less than 450 cm3. A daily ranking will also be established.

In very fast stages, speed is limited to 160 km/hr for motorbikes.

Revamp of categories for motorbike competitors. There will only be two categories for motorbikes. The "Marathon" category includes all motorbikes that have not been modified, or very little, compared to production models. Prototype motorbikes, as well as all those that have had substantial modifications, are included in the "Super Production" category.
