The Amateurs in the race
The Dakar is a race made up of over 80% amateurs who battle alongside professionals in the discipline. Over and beyond help proposed in searching for sponsors (see CD-Rom), regulations offering possibilities which are not allowed for professionals and Dakar training courses, A.S.O. also proposes the following measures:

 Registration fees reserved for amateurs

The possibility of specially adapted fees enables amateur competitors to benefit from a reduction of €2,200 in the bike category and €1,700 in the car class on enrolment fees (reduction per person), if they register between the 1st June and the 18th July 2005.

 1st Participation Trophy

For the 6th year running, a special classification reserved for amateur crews (cars or bikes) taking part in the Dakar for the first time will be implemented in addition to other classifications. The total amount of prizemoney for the “1st Participation Trophy” is €26,300.

 Arrival prizemoney, reserved for amateurs

Total prizemoney distributed by A.S.O. amounts to €197,900. Since overall classification and classification by category are always won by professionals, classifications by group and class with significant prizemoney, exclusively earmarked for amateurs, have been set up. Amounts total €112,200.

 Assistance for bikers

A.S.O. will allow amateur bikers to transport an equipment trunk (trunk supplied) and two wheels. In addition, technical assistance will be available for them (light, compressed air, welding etc…) around the “bike trunk” plane, meeting point for amateurs.
For the third year, a motorcycle consultant will be present on the “bike trunk” plane to help and advise amateur competitors with any questions they might have, whether these be logistic or sporting in nature.

 Total and Elf Trophies

Total continues to support competitors via its Total Fair Play Trophy and the Elf Motorcycle Trophy.

The Total Fair Play Trophy
At the end of each stage, this award, together with a bonus of €1,000, will be made to a particularly worthy competitor, in biking, quad, car, truck or assistance vehicle categories. Courage, perseverance, helping others out, sportsmanship – these are some of the values that will be rewarded.

The Elf Motorcycle Trophy
For those bikers registered, this trophy offers an award in the shape of products, logistic and technical assistance through a plane specially dedicated to the operation. A bonus (€15,000 shared between the first 5) is distributed at the end of the race.
