France
France Télévisions broadcast 21hours 30 minutes of programmes devoted to the Rally including over 2 hours of items on the Dakar in daily news slots on France 2 and France 3.
“Le journal du Dakar” on France 3 recorded an average of 2.9 M viewers as against 2.7 M in 2004.
“Les Aventuriers du Dakar”, the programme aimed at amateurs every afternoon on France 2, held its audience steady at 1.5 M viewers throughout the Rally and “L'image du Jour”, shown every evening at the end of the news on France 2 at 20.35, was seen by an average of almost 4.7 M viewers.
Throughout the Rally, 83% of French people saw images from the Dakar, on average 8.2 times each.
International
In 2005, over 560 hours of programmes were broadcast across 178 countries.
74 TV channels broadcast programmes on the Dakar.
New Media
For the 2005 edition of the Dakar, A.S.O. introduced IT-based innovations by enabling subscribers to French mobile operator SFR and Spanish Telefonica to follow news on the Rally live and exclusively from their mobiles.
Exclusive services proposed included:
- access to daily summaries in the form of videos with French and Spanish commentaries available every day just after the stage finish,
- the possibility of following the race live: news, results and classifications, description of the stages...,
- the possibility of downloading the best Dakar photos as screen background,
- the possibility of playing the official Dakar game.
INFRASTRUCTURE FOR 2006
In France
France Télévisions teams on site will be ensuring daily coverage:
France 2 / France 3
- Saga Dakar on France 2 (except for Sunday 15 January on France 3).
From Monday to Friday: from 2 to 6 January the from 9 to 13 January - 40' around 18.00.
Saturday 7 and 14 January from 17.50 to 18.50.
- Le Journal du Dakar on France 3
Every evening around 20.10 from Sunday 1 to Saturday 14 January inclusive
- Bivouac: programming to come.
- Stade 2 on France 2: Sunday 8 and 15 January.

- The Saga Dakar and Bivouac programmes are rebroadcast every morning on France 4.

The increase in TV coverage (over 600 hours of programmes scheduled for 2006) is linked to the growing internationalization of the Rally and heightened media interest in national competitors.
Over 75 channels will be transmitting the latest news of the race across almost 180 countries on a daily basis through a 26-minute programme produced by A.S.O. and sent from the Bivouac every day.
Over 25 international TV channels will be on hand at the Bivouac to ensure production of Dakar programmes dedicated to the performances of their national competitors and stars.

NEW MEDIA, PERSPECTIVES FOR THE 2006 DAKAR
For 2006, A.S.O. is extending its New Media field of activity and proposing:
- for major international Internet portals, access to the official content of the Dakar: video clips with commentaries in 5 languages (French, English, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch), live race coverage, application of Iritrack for real-time following of competitors' positions
- for major European mobile phone operators (France, Belgium, Portugal, Netherlands...), the possibility of offering exclusive Dakar contents to subscribers (video clips, competition games...) as well as a right to communicate about the event.
- for Dakar partners and competitors, the possibility of using new media to dynamize their partnership (access to Internet content, SMS alerts and results...).

Over 7,000 written press articles were published in France, the UK, Spain and Germany, representing a diffusion of 574 million copies.
In France, 2,446 written press articles were published.
The event is covered by all types of press:
- regional dailies cover follow-up of amateur competitors and their work is facilitated by the presence of a press agency set up by the organisation for some two years now,
- the automotive press gives a large space to the rally,
- national dailies devote an average of 3 pages per day to the event
54 hours of radio broadcasts (2,639 items) mainly on national radios: France Info, RTL, Europe 1, RMC, RFI
