A race open to everyone
The Telefonica Dakar is above all a race created for amateurs in which professionals have their place. To encourage amateurs to register and reward them when they arrive at Dakar, the following measures have been introduced by ASO this year.

Special entry fee for amateurs

Specific registration fees have been introduced for amateur competitors giving them a €2,200 reduction in the cost of registration for motorbikes and €1,700 for auto competitors (for each participant), if they register between the 1st June and 30th July 2004.

Trophy for first participants

For the 5th year, there will be a special classification for amateur teams participating for the first time in the Dakar (auto or motorbike), on top of the other classifications. The total amount of the “1st participation Trophy” is €23,000.

Finish prize for amateurs

The totality of the prizes distributed by A.S.O. is €150,000. However, the majority of the classifications (general and category) are won by professionals. This is why classifications by Group and Class have been specifically created, in addition to those that already exist, to recompense amateurs. Prize money for these classifications will be €76,250, exclusively for amateurs taking part in the Dakar.

Transport of assistance for motorbike participants

As in previous years, ASO is offering amateur motorbike riders the possibility of transporting an equipment trunk (the trunk is supplied) and two wheels, as well as technical assistance (light, compressed air, welding equipment etc.) in the transport plane, the meeting point for all amateurs.

Total Trophees

Total will once again be lending its support to competitors via the Total Trophy for Fair Play and the Elf Motorcycle Trophy.

The Total Trophy for Fair Play
At the end of each stage, this honour, along with a prize of €1,000, will be awarded to an especially deserving competitor, whether they be in the motorcycle, quad, car, truck or assistance category. Values rewarded will include courage, perseverance, helping others and sportsmanship.

The Elf Motorcycle Trophy
This offers participating amateur motorcycle riders a “products” grant, logistical and technical assistance provided by a specially dedicated aircraft, and, last but not least, psychological and moral support. A bonus (€15,000 divided between the top 5) will be awarded at the end of the race.

École du Dakar

Any new participant, whether auto or motorbike, can participate in one of the two courses in France for a lump sum of €100 (subject to availability: see details at the end of the registration conditions - Driving course Dakar School).
