A media-intensive event
The Telefónica Dakar 2004 featured extensive media coverage, particularly in France with over 107 hours of the race relayed on radio and TV and nearly 4,000 press articles for a total of 7,276 media reports (in the written press and on TV and radio).

The Dakar rally generated nearly 44 hours of radio programming, mostly on general interest channels (France Info, RMC Info, RTL, RFI, etc.)

The competitors

For several years, the Dakar has attracted an ever increasing number of participants, as reflected in the chart below. To this increase in entries is added a more international participation, with a rise in the numbers of foreign competitors. France (257 out of a total of 1,250 participants in 2004), is the most represented country, ahead of Spain (65), Italy (51) and Belgium (48).
