“We have the necessary speed”
After an excellent 4th place in 2007, the top crew from the Ginaf Rally Power team is fully focused on its objective. Wulfert Van Ginkel knows that his destiny as a driver has to lead him to one of the three steps of the podium in the truck class. The performance was already expected for the 2009 Dakar but the first day in Argentina was to be full of bad surprises: “We punctured all the right tires and we immediately lost a lot of time. We then had problems overtaking in the following stages so we were never able to catch up lost time, added to the fact that we also witnessed steering problems. So we finished eighth, a ranking that doesn’t really show our level”.
As soon as they returned home, the whole team immediately went back to work. One trip came after another to check in the Moroccan dunes the technical choices operated at the workshop. Accurately, the mechanics managed to turn things around: “The truck has improved a lot. It only concerns little details, explains Wulfert, but that’s what made us loose time last year. Because I know that we have the necessary speed to reach the podium but we mainly have to avoid problems to maintain that speed. On that point of view, I believe that we have done what was necessary, so I’m confident”.
