« Tu passes l’année à travailler pour être au départ »

Chez les Lepan, le Dakar est une passion qui se transmet de père en fils. Le paternel, Frédéric, a connu les joies de la course en Afrique. Son fils, « marqué par la magie du Dakar, l’ambiance, l’entraide, les paysages », a pris la relève en 2022. Si les deux hommes ont aujourd’hui le logo du Dakar tatoué sur le bras, le jeune Normand a dû être patient : son père refusait qu’il pratique la moto durant son enfance et son adolescence. Il s’est mis au motocross sur le tard, a participé aux championnats de France et d’Europe, avant d’intégrer des stages de rallye-raid. Étonnant 21e de son premier Dakar, il a enchaîné avec une 17e place en 2023, confirmant être l’un des nouveaux visages français dans la discipline. Dans son quotidien de taxi-ambulancier très chargé, Jean-Loup s’est organisé pour participer à la suite de la Coupe du monde de rallye-raid. Quand il a su que son concours professionnel de taxi le contraindrait à manquer le Sonora Rally, il s’est démené pour s’inscrire en dernière minute à l’Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge… qu’il a remporté en Rally2 ! Ses efforts n’ont pas été vains puisqu’il finit 3e du championnat, avec en poche le titre Junior. Un nouveau statut qui fait de lui l’un des pilotes français attendus sur ce Dakar, même s’il prévient : avant de penser au podium Rally2, il faudra gérer ses efforts pour aller au bout des deux semaines de compétition.

« Je m’étais dit de faire trois Dakar pour apprendre, voici mon troisième ! Je suis encore jeune et j’ai besoin d’expérience. J’ai terminé 17e en 2023 mais il y a eu beaucoup d’abandons, même si cela fait partie de la course. Le Dakar est une aventure et je suis avant tout là pour l’expérience humaine. En participant au W2RC, j’ai découvert de nouveaux pays comme l’Argentine, et des gens formidables. Il y a beaucoup de prétendants au podium en Rally2, des dangers à éviter, l’aspect mécanique à tenir en compte… On paie les musiciens à la fin du bal, alors on verra à l’arrivée. Le résultat sera la cerise sur le gâteau, mais je serai content avec le simple fait de franchir l’arrivée. Ce serait déjà une victoire ! Tu passes 365 jours de ton année à travailler pour trouver des moyens, te préparer et participer. Chez moi, tout le monde fait des efforts de dingue, alors je me dois d’être à l’arrivée. »

Lepan missed a waypoint

Jean-Loup Lepan, the overall leader going into the special, dropped about 15 minutes to Romain Dumontier today. The Duust Diverse Racing rider crossed the finish line knowing that he had also missed the first waypoint of the special, adding a 15-minute penalty to his woes for a total loss of more than half an hour to his fellow countryman (see his quote).
