SAFETY: A MAJOR PREOCCUPATION OF THE ORGANISATION

The safety of the competitors, public and credentialed persons is priority one of the organizers. Like with all major extreme sporting adventures, the Dakar comes with risks. The organizers do everything possible to limit the risks as much as possible.
Every year all the processes related to safety are reviewed in order to be optimized.

Spectator zones and prevention

Spectator zones and prevention

  • „„The Dakar enjoys a phenomenal success in South America (4.4 million spectators in 2016).
  • „„We will put in place protected and surveyed spectator zones in order to ensure the safety of spectators.
    • 51 secured spectator zones will be arranged for the 2017 edition.
    • A massive communication campaign (print media, radio, television, display) will begin ahead of time to inform the public of the correct behavior to observe.
    • The localization of the spectator zones will be made public three days before the passing of the rally on the official internet site and via local media.
    • In Argentina, where the public turnout is the heaviest, 30 officers from the Highway Security (Seguridad Vial) aboard 15 dedicated vehicles will supervise the behavior of the public.

Road safety

  • „„All accredited drivers (competitors or not) on the Dakar must sign a charter, a commitment to proper behaviour before the start of the event.
  • „Respect of current driving regulation in the different countries is an absolute necessity.
  • „Data recorded by the GPS is analysed for possible sanctions.
  • „Speed controls are also conducted by law enforcement.

The PCO, a veritable control tower of the rally

  • „„This is an Operational Coordination Post that manages all the rally info (Iritrack, beacons, radio communication, etc.).
  • „„The PCO on site has a mirror PC in Paris.
  • „35 people on round-the-clock duty.
  • „„The tracking equipment has been doubled this year on all motorbikes and quads.
  • „„Safety and simulation sessions are organized prior to the rally with the authorities of all the concerned countries.
